Mamma Mia

Mother’s Day is the same day every year, but some how it always sneaks up on me. A week before is when the panic sinks in. What do I get her? Do I buy a card or make one? When is the last possible second I can mail it? (It rarely makes it on time – it takes a while for me to come up with ideas, okay?) Then I think about the other lovely mamas in my life I need to show my appreciation to. Do I get them a card or is a phone call/text appropriate? This year, I decided to go electronic with my gift and messages. You may call it lazy, I call it on time.

Therefore, in spirit of another holiday, and for all of those mothers I hope felt special on Mother’s Day (and everyday), I decided it was a good time to tell one of my favourite stories from a few years back. It was a time when I played with children, under the sun, from Monday to Friday and was paid for it! It was not only a good time, but the best birth control.

Children and seniors have lots in common, for instance, they say the darndest things and I heard many throughout my three summers working for the community services programs in my hometown.

It was a sunny afternoon and we were slowly winding down for the day. A few participants and myself were sharing stories as we impatiently awaited their parents’ arrival. One little guy around the age of five or six, bragged to the group that his mom’s name had two m’s in it. When I asked him what her name was, he replied, “Linda.”

Puzzled, I quickly spelled the name in my head and did not seem to find any m’s.

So I continued, “how does she spell that?”

He proudly responded, “M-O-M!”

Touché my friend, touché.

I hope all of you mothers had a wonderful Mother’s Day. I specifically need to thank my amazing Mom, Grandma, Auntie, Sister-in-law, friends and friends’ moms who are all strong mamas who have impacted my crazy life.

My mom deserved the Keith Urban concert tickets…I’m honoured to accompany her!

Hey there. I’m Rachelle. I’m a Saskatchewan girl living in an Albertan world. I enjoy the simple things in life like all you can eat sushi, that spiral brush on my eyebrows and freshly vacuumed carpet. I’m a Recreation Therapist and my day is about as predictable as my curls. The people I’ve had the pleasure of working with and my own clumsiness has resulted in some pretty entertaining stories. This blog is simply a place to share those stories and hopefully bring a smile to your face too.
