What’s Old Got To Do With It?

How do people decide on a name for his/her car? It seems they immediately assume the gender, they usually choose a vintage name and it usually makes no sense to anyone else. In case you are having any issues naming your car, there are quizzes on the Internet to help you out. If you need that much help darling, just call it the Volkswagen.

Owning a car comes with a lot of responsibility – insurance, loans, keeping the inside and outside clean, tires, maintenance and apparently annual registration. Who knew? Everyone except me. The City bus isn’t looking so bad these days.

When I received the registration ticket I turned to my oldest brother for three reasons:

  1. He often gives good advice
  2. He works from home and on occasion will answer my calls
  3. There was a possibility he was dumb enough to have done the same thing in his lifetime

I usually gloat about my independence, but now I’m going to gloat about my rebelliousness.

Thank goodness I have older and wiser people in my life to help me out in time of need and a good laugh.

In Beauty Hacks, I surprised a resident with hand sanitizer. Today I surprised a resident with her age.

Celebrating birthdays in a health care setting is tricky because some people want the world to know it’s their birthday and some don’t even want me to know it’s their birthdaySo I simply gift them a card when we are alone, they are offered a piece of cake at dinner and we throw one big party at the end of the month.

I entered a resident’s room (who is usually not very happy) in the early morning and enthusiastically said, “Happy Birthday!”

Her eyes lit up and she grabbed the card from my hand before I could even tell her it was for her.

Tears welled up in her eyes as she read the birthday card, which almost brought tears to my eyes (can’t ruin my mascara so early in the morning).

Once she exhaled a deep breath, she asked me how old she was. I informed her that it was her 94th birthday.

She suddenly exclaimed, “Holy shit I’m old!”

I began to laugh and she continued, “holy shit you’re young!”

There were a lot of holy shits and a lot of laughs.

She definitely has not lost her wit at 94.

Today is Red Nose Day – a fundraiser event for children poverty. I will be doing something special with the residents and there is the NBC special tonight with all of the celebrities – I wasn’t invited.

Canada

Hey there. I’m Rachelle. I’m a Saskatchewan girl living in an Albertan world. I enjoy the simple things in life like all you can eat sushi, that spiral brush on my eyebrows and freshly vacuumed carpet. I’m a Recreation Therapist and my day is about as predictable as my curls. The people I’ve had the pleasure of working with and my own clumsiness has resulted in some pretty entertaining stories. This blog is simply a place to share those stories and hopefully bring a smile to your face too.
